October 30

We took a local bus around Avatiu,
Rarotonga, Cook Islands today.
We saw a small section of the huge
lagoon but did not get out. The only
tour offered in and included swimming
and snorkeling and since can do neither
we did not take it.

Murder Mystery Dinner

October 29

We had a great time at the Murder Mystery
Dinner. The suspects were some of the singers
and dancers. Unfortunately pictures did
not all turn out good

Buses, Kings, and Coconuts

October 28

We were aware that we would not have the
large AC buses we were used to. It has been
nice getting closer to the locals.

Our guide Naka today said Tonga was
99% Christian. I think that might be a little
high, but it is definitely more than USA.

Eunice told us that stealing was worst crime
and they did not have murder. We really
could learn from them.

Tonga is the only SP country that has a
Monarchy (for 1000 years). Also it is the
only country that was not colonized.

Coconut trees are plentiful. It is called
the tree of life because it can feed and
shelter you.

Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga II

Neiafu,Vava'u, Tonga

October 28

In Neiafu, Vava’u, Tonga we took a bus to
a nearby beach where we had a
demonstration of the men cooking Sunday
dinner.

They had prepared three fires, one to show
how the fire was prepared, one with hot
stones where food was added, covered in
bleaves and rocks to hold them down and
covered in dirt. The third fire had finished
cooking and they removed dirt and leaves
to show finished meal.

We then had demonstrations of tapa cloth
making and mat weaving.
We also saw a kava ceremony and dancing.

We had quite an adventure getting back to
the ship. Apparently the tide had gone out
because the water line was very low and it
was about a three foot step from pier to
tender. Everyone had to sit down on the pier
to get in. It was difficult for everyone but
really difficult for those with mobility issues
and people with bad knees.

Later:

Not unexpectedly, we were late getting everyone
on board today. We learned from other
passengers that they changed the dock
location but it was a long difficult walk
and we had to share with other boats.
The waiting line was very long. The captain
said the tender kept getting lower and the
step down higher.

Nuku'akofa, Tonga II

With Nakoa, our on location guide

Eunice

Trilithon

Cemetery

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

October 27

We had a wonderful tour of Nuku”alofa, Tonga
today. We visited a number of sites including
royal palace, royal tomb, Cook’s landing, and
triliphon.

Our guide Eunice, daughter of a minister was
wonderful. The people of Tonga and many of the
South Pacific islands are very religious. The early
missionaries did a good job in the South Pacific.
Methodists and Catholics are the largest
denominations.

If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium

October 27

Cruising can cause you to lose track
of what day it is. Crossing the international
date line, losing days and having two of the
same day can really be confusing. If we’re
having a problem remembering what day it is,
we just go look at the floor in the elevator.
